What’s a Little AI Content Between Friends?

I remember deciding to only use my laptop for work, but to keep using my typewriter and notebooks for “serious writing”. I also remember using the electric grill “only when we’re in a rush”. But you end up using the easier tool all the time anyway.

We probably all remember similar moments. The decision to take the easier way often meant saying goodbye to hands-on experiences we will look back on fondly later in life.

Wine in the bag, drive-thru restaurants, coffee capsules, AI content … society is constantly coming up with ways to make our lives easier. If only we used that time to do something remarkable. Sure, being a doctor counts as something remarkable, but bingeing all of Succession in one day does not.

Cutting Corners is Fine, just don’t Leave Me with a Round Sandwich

Creating content is hard work. Who wants to invest the time? There’s already so much of it! Do we need any more?

This is a blog article, so we’re not even talking about video, images, or audio – we’re just talking about online articles. There is talk that seven million blog posts are published every day.

If you spend three minutes reading a blog post, then you would need about 40 years to read all the posts that will be created in the next 24 hours. If you did nothing else.

I forgot to mention print or social media content. You get the picture.

The temptation when we’re faced with difficult tasks is to cut corners. That’s fine at times, as long as we don’t cut out anything important. When we’re writing, we shouldn’t cut out the human element.

Honestly, I don’t want to get into the conversation about AI content and SEO (search engine optimisation). It’s enough to say, we’ve never much liked the thought of being replaced by machines, so let’s not encourage them by letting our brains get fat and useless.

AI-generated content is no replacement for human-generated content because the machine only works with the data we have given it. People can still think out of the box and grasp the potential use and need behind the content they are creating.

Why is Writing Content so Difficult?

Writing is probably 90% thinking about what you want to write, 5% writing it, and 5% editing it all around. Coming up with an idea, possibly researching it, and coming up with interesting sentences, are just some of the stumbling blocks people have.

Then there’s writer’s block. But, have you heard this? Writer’s block is a myth. The real problem is often that we don’t take writing seriously enough. Maybe Writer’s Block isn’t a myth. What can you do?

Some people take years to write a story. Margaret Mitchell took 10 years to write Gone with the Wind. On the other hand, Stephen King claims to write ten pages of a book each day. Now, you might say this is fiction, which is always more difficult to write. Agreed, but fiction is an important part of marketing. Storytelling is a way to connect what you are marketing with your audience. Emotion sells.

Writing a 700-word blog post, which you need to think about, write, and then edit, will take me a couple of hours. Sometimes I get stuck and it takes me days. You might need to return to it. Compare that with AI content from ChatGPT which took about 25 seconds to deliver an article on the topic you are now reading.

And no, this article is not what ChatGPT wrote. Scout’s honour.

How Should You Use AI and AI Content?

You can use AI to assist you with a lot of your small business work. Just be sure to use AI as a tool, and not as a replacement for your own skills and talents.

Your small business can use AI for more than just automating repetitive tasks or analyzing customer data. You can also leverage AI in your SEO activities.

When using AI, assistive is the important term to remember.

  1. Assist with content ideas and topics
ChatGPT can help you generate new ideas and topics for blog posts, social media content or email campaigns.
  2. Help with the structure of content
Be careful: you shouldn’t just take the layout blindly. Use AI as you would a muse. Use your own style, your expertise and your business.
  3. Support you with keyword ideas
AI can also help you identify keywords and keyphrases for SEO (search engine optimization) that interest your target audience.

Why is Creating Content Yourself so Important?

No one is going to blacklist your website if a little AI content finds its way in. We all use digital tools for our content creation every day. Image editing, grammar checkers, video and audio cutting tools, and even our websites contain plugins and themes. Well, we aren’t all multimedia designers or website developers.

The point is, writing the content yourself is important. It matters.

Think about the last time you made dinner, baked a cake, painted, or hemmed a piece of clothing. Every time we do something with our own hands we release real dopamine – that pleasure chemical that keeps us glued to social media and amusing cat videos.

Making things with your hands is great for decreasing stress, relieving anxiety and improving mental health. In addition, research confirms that making things with your hands is a large part of finding your flow, and flow is highly correlated with happiness.
